Links of Love for Haiti

St. Agatha School has long been a friend of the People of Haiti. Beginning in 2005, when students and their families sent ten oil drums filled with children’s sandals and shoes and last year’s Walk for Haiti which raised nearly ten thousand dollars for the St. Rock Foundation, students have been committed to assisting their Haitian neighbors in any of their needs. Our Pastor, Fr. Casey, our Librarian, Mrs. Tierney and many parishioners have visited Haiti and brought snacks, school supplies, toys and games to the children of St. Rock School. Parish nurses have also been to Haiti many times to assist at the St. Rock Hospital. In gratitude, the people of the St. Rock village have sent furniture, metal and woodwork to our school. These tokens of gratitude line the walls in the school. The people of St. Rock and St. Agatha Parish share a special bond which makes the present tragedy so personal to them.

When the earthquake devastated the poor people of Haiti, our parish Senior Priest in Residence, Fr. Butler was there with his brother. He arrived home safely, but with terrible memories of the suffering of the Haitian people. In response to this tragedy, St. Agatha School has formed a chain, Links of Love, for Haiti. Students paid 50 cents each to buy a link in their classroom chain. Many of these classroom chains measured as long as 100 feet. If all the chains were linked together they would have measured out to the length of four football fields! Parents heard about this school project and they, too, bought links in a chain. One parent, for example, bought 400 links in one day!

The monies raised by this special mission to Haiti totaled over $5000.00 and will be sent to Haiti immediately. In May, the school children will again participate in a Walk for Haiti. While the earthquake has brought the whole world’s attention to this small, poor country’s plight, St. Agatha School has long been aware of the need to help bring hope and love to God’s people in this poor land.

Our chain has no limit. Do you want to add to the chain? Send your donation to St. Agatha School. We will be sending the money to our sisters and brothers at St. Rock.

Joe and Joan Clifford of Quincy are visiting in Mrs. Athas' room. The Cliffords 8 children attended St. Agatha School, and 6 of their grandchildren attend or have attendedSt. Agatha School, with more on the way.
