St. Agatha School Essay Contest
Try Prayer, It Works |
|
It was 'Super Tuesday' during Catholic Schools Week for the 8th Grade ELA Class. Last month, Fr. Murphy and Mr. McDermott worked together with the 8th Graders on an essay contest that was sponsored by Holy Cross Family Ministries. The writing assignment focused on the theme, Try Prayer, It Works. Since the start of the year, Fr. Murphy has established a highly valuable rapport and chemistry with the 8th Graders, and he spoke with them a number of times as part of the pre-writing process before they began their final essays. In addition to hopefully being officially acknowledged by the Holy Cross Family Ministries, Fr. Murphy also chose five essays that he felt warranted special acknowledgement. As a celebration of the students work, Fr. Murphy hosted a 'Mr. McD.'s McMuffin Party' on Tuesday morning for the entire 8th Grade in Room 8A. It was a Super, and Prayerful, Tuesday, celebrated of course with muffins, croissants, and bagels…all courtesy of Mrs. Simmons. |
The essay winners chosen by Fr. Murphy are:
Rachel Bargoot, Dean Colarusso, Miles Dias, Hanna Hefler, and Claire Lyons. |

Faith, Voices, and Trust
“Fear not, I am with you”, is a very shrewd phrase. If one is poignant, you could say this to yourself, and know that God is with you. If one says this in an untrustworthy manner, God may come through but one should always have faith in him. Prayer is not something God asks one to do a lot; it is more of a “voice.” It can change someone’s thought or feeling in a very special way. So always remember if one is gloom, “try prayer, it works.” |

A Very Powerful Medicine
Prayer is different for everyone. For me, prayer is a personal conversation with God; it is a very important element in my life. There have been many times in which prayer has helped me, and one special time it helped someone I love in a miraculous way.
Last summer, my aunt was diagnosed with a serious illness. She was given six months to live. My aunt put her faith in God, and asked that we pray for her to be strong. A month after the horrible news, my aunt called to say she was cancer free. I don’t know of a more powerful medicine than prayer – do you? |

Forming Prayer: Forming Life
Prayer is a topic practiced worldwide. Prayer does not have to be formal; it just has to be thought. One may not know they are praying because there are so many forms of prayer. It can just be a thought in your head lingering all day.
One definition of prayer is a rising of one’s mind and heart to God, like visiting with Him. As a Catholic, I pray each day and it is a huge part of my life. Without it, I do not know what my life would be like; it would be unimaginable. When I form prayer, I am forming my life. |

God the Guidance Counselor
To me, prayer is listening to God’s suggestions. Prayer helps me reflect on my day’s ups and downs. Prayer should be the discharge of feelings to God whenever you feel overwhelmed with problems. When I visit one of my adored family member I always remember not to convey any of my distractions in the world. If everyone in the world did the same, people would see the world in a more placid way. I see my family and God in very similar ways. Both want me to succeed and both push me forward in my life. |

Life Goes On
Prayer – it is perhaps the strongest word every introduced into the English language. Prayer has a unique role in everyone’s life. For me, praying is the time of night when I can sit and be with my thoughts. While reflecting, I think of how happy the loved ones I have lost must be in heaven and I hope that I will be with and visit them again someday. I imagine that me reunion with my loved ones will be with as much jubilance as the Virgin Mother’s visit with Elizabeth.
Also, I remember the life Jesus lived. Doing this helps me realize that no matter what tribulation I face life will go on and nothing is forever. Prayer is special to me because it helps keep me grounded…as my life goes on. |
