LABORATORY NOTEBOOK for Science -This
is your profile
All students are required to maintain a laboratory notebook.
The notebook is to be a 3-ring notebook. All of your
work in class is to be recorded in your notebook.
Your laboratory notebook is:
* a place to record what you see and do (including mistakes)
* a place to record what you THINK about what you see
and do
* a place to ask QUESTIONS and draw conclusions about
the experiences and results
* a place to track your feelings and attitudes about
your experiences
* a seedbed of ideas for experiments and creativity
* a record of your accomplishments during your time in
this class
Requirements for work done directly into the notebook:
+ a page for every day in class with a date at the top
+ a record of what was done during class every day
+ all homework assignments
+ all notes taken in class
+ all video notes
+ a CPA REPORT on Fridays of every week: an accounting
of
CONCEPTS - PROCESS - ATTITUDE for the week
Concept = What are the science ideas you are learning?
Process = What are the experiments you are doing?
Attitude = What are the habits of the mind you are using?
What do you think and feel about what you are studying?
CONVERGENT AND DIVERGENT THINKING/WRITING
+ Record accurately your observations and activities
(convergent), then you will own them. Use language for
informing -- external view
+Learn, think and discover (divergent)-- many scientists
have actually discovered while recording their thinking
and speculations about their work. Use a language of
learning -- inside the mind
CONVERGENT: verify, record, exact, procedure, WHAT? HOW?
DIVERGENT: free, flexible, explore, discover, inquire,
WHAT IF? SO WHAT?
Try these in your notebook this year. Learn habits of
the mind
NOTEBOOK GRADE:
** Notebooks will be collected at least once, maybe
twice during the quarter. Some assignments will be specifically
graded, others will be checked for completion and points
will be given accordingly.
+ POINTS WILL BE GIVEN FOR EACH DAY BASED ON THE ACTIVITY.
+You are to grade and correct your own work as assignments
are discussed in class. Feel free to make corrections,
additions and deletions directly on your work as class
proceeds.
+ Some assignments will be given more attention by me
and will be worth more points.
+ You will be given points based on the work represented
in your notebook.
It is, therefore, your responsibility to make sure you
know about all assigned work AND have it completed and
in your notebook when notebooks are collected.
+ Notebooks can be randomly collected at unannounced
times.
+ Your notebook work will be worth about 20% of your
grade.
