Year of Faith
Year of Faith
On Thursday, October 11, the St. Agatha School community, in unity with the Church throughout the world, initiated the Year of Faith, as proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI.  This date of October 11 for this initiation is a significant one for many reasons. October 11 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II) and the twentieth anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. During this Year of Faith, our Holy Father has asked all Catholic Christians to study and reflect on the documents of Vatican II and the Catechism so that they may deepen their knowledge of the faith and, consequently, love of God and His Church.
To open the Year of Faith for the school community, Deacon Sullivan led us in a Church prayer service. Deacon Dan reminded all present of their Baptismal call to love God as He first loved us. The Year of Faith is a time to “strengthen our faith” in God’s love and to respond to His love in our worship and service of Him. The children and staff wore blue bracelets embossed with those words. Deacon Dan blessed these signs of faith and encouraged everyone to wear these bracelets as a reminder to pray throughout the coming year that God will strengthen our faith in Him. The children were asked to pray, “Strengthen my faith, Lord,” whenever they look at these bracelets. During this meaningful service, the congregation also professed their faith, and our soon-to-be communicants in the second grade led the congregation in prayer and petition. The service ended with a rousing rendition of the hymn, “AMEN!” (Yes, Lord, I BELIEVE!) We are grateful to Deacon Dan for his faithful service to God and His Church, and most especially His children of St. Agatha School.
